Farm-to-table and sustainable food are all the buzz the days. While Blue Hill Farm in New York may get the most press (at least as far as Farm-Restaurants go), Serenbe Farms down in Palmetto continues to get some real serious attention. The NYTimes ran a great article on the “utopia” that is Serenbe Farms!
I can’t wait to get down there to check out The Farmhouse, the onsite restaurant! Tony Seichrist (who left to go to Holeman & Finch) got his start at Farmhouse and the restaurant is helmed by Nick Melvin. That may ring a bell for a few readers as Melvin used to work at Murphy’s, Room, & Tap here in the ATL.

Until last night, I was shamefully ignorant to the tragic history of Violette restaurant. The short of the long is that proprietor Guy Long, a native of Alsace-Lorraine, came to the United States after his mother passed. In 1989, he met Stephanie Belcher and from that that meeting, a relationship flourished. Eventually, the two became both business partners and engaged to be married.
In 1995, the couple opened Violette on Clairmont Rd. Eight years later, a series of crimes left Luck dead, Belcher alone, and the restaurant in an awkward place [More reading on CL]. Five-years later, Belcher runs the show and the restaurant is alive and kicking. From what I understand, Belcher employs a head chef; and while the food was a disappointment, my hat is off to Ms. Belcher. More after the jump!
Sandwich Shop Stops: quick, say that again three times! So after a LOT of research, I have come up with a list of 20 spots to visit. Two places that I want to try are named… but not included in that twenty. I really wanted to focus on locally owned and operated Atlanta joints; however, I did include three franchises. Details after the jump!
That picture isn’t photoshopped (as far as I can tell) – at 3500 mg of cholesterol per serving … this crap will kill you. With my vote over at the Consumerist.com, 4971 people concur that this is the worst stuff ever. I’m curious what food the 7% of voters had in mind.
This week has been a pretty successful week for me (as far as food goes). I had a little chili in Ellijay, a return trip to Holeman & Finch, an introductory trip to Patak Meats, and two trips to Via Elisa. Subconsciously, this must have been a self-imposed reward after last weeks excursions. I’ve already mentioned my trip to the Shed; now it’s time to talk about Dogwood.
Here’s something that will spread like wildfire amongst us local Atlanta bloggers: The Oak Room in New York finally had enough with the bad reviews (he’ah and he’ah). While Frank Bruni may not deliver the apocalypse in all walks of life, as far as the NYC dining scene goes – he might be the one most likely to do just that. According to John Kessler, Joël Antunes recently joined the rank and file of the unemployed.
I hate to say it folks; but, the idea that a highly regarded ATL chef didn’t pan out in New York is not a surprise.
As many people know [because of this blog … right??? ], Leon’s Full Service in Decatur auctioned off the first pint served at the restaurant. The charitable event raised $2,650! That is impressive.
However, recent news out of London puts that to shame. Woolworths (wiki), that now collapsed retail chain, elected to auction off their last bag of pic’n’mix (wiki) for a charitable cause. The auction closed at £14,500 (roughly $20,700)! That’s a lotta dough for such a small amount of candy.
The auction was conducted on eBay and the winning bidder had private feedback; I sure hope this sale goes through.
I’m not 100% sure when … but apparently – Serpas True Food is going to offer a brunch menu. I’ve only been once, and while they didn’t hit it out of the park, I think Serpas has a great deal of potential. I plan to get back soon and I’ll let ya’ll know as soon as I confirm their brunch date.
So as Pancake Day has come and gone, I wanted to jump in with one last quick tidbit about the day. Chefs Sean McGinlay and Natalie King of Glasgow’s Hilton Grosvenor hotel have laid claim to the record for the tallest pancake skyscraper
I’m not sure if they are going to get the recognition from the Guiness Book of World Records, and I’m not sure it really matters! This thing is just freakin’ sweet! Apparently, the batch of flapjacks used 100 eggs, more than 17 pints of milk, 11lbs of flour and 6.6lbs of butter. 22-hours and 672 pancakes later, McGinlay had himself a 29.5 inch stack. According to Guinness World Records, the current official record stands at 29.1in.
