JCT Kitchen Goes Bacon On Food Network Tonight At 9:30 3

Posted by foodiebuddha on June 30, 2009

On tonight’s episode of The Best Thing I Ever Ate, you’ll get a chance to see the “Angry Mussels” from JCT Kitchen. [Yes … the same dish that I recently said “squeaks by meekly”]  While I’m not really a huge fan of JCT and yes, I’m over the whole bacon craze, it’s nice when any local restaurant gets national attention.  For all you homebodies, foodies, dvr freaks (that would be me), and anyone else with cable … tune in tonight (that’s June 30th) at 9:30 PM EST for some local love.

If you happen to miss it, the show will air again at 12:30 AM on the 1st (just a few hours later) and again on the 11th at 6:00.

Kick Some Ass Then Freeze Some Corona

Okay, so this doesn’t really involved kicking ass … but freezing beer is a kick ass thing to do … details as follows:

taqueria el rey del taco - the digs taqueria el rey del taco - more digs

Last week, a few of us got together for some lunch at Taqueria El Rey Del Taco. It seems almost like clockwork: once every handful of months, an Atlanta food blogger heads over to Buford Highway to grab some of ERDT’s lauded tacos.  Last week was my turn.

Bon Appetit Misses The Mark On America’s Best New Barbecue 4

Posted by foodiebuddha on June 29, 2009

Creative Loafing ran a little bit on a recent article in Bon Appétit.  BA decided to get in on the barbecue debate by naming the America’s ten best NEW barbecue places.  The mention on CL motivated me to revisit my thoughts on the list that was released earlier this month.

Top 10 lists are really hard to do, especially when your sample size is the entire US of A.  Heck, it’s hard enough to name the top 10 in any given city, let alone, the country.  But still … they could have done better.  Is it any surprise to you that I find the list a debacle for several reasons?  Keep in mind, I’ve only hit 3 of these spots, but those trips have told me all I need to know.

First, the list is supposed to discuss new restaurants.  Granted, there isn’t a hard definition for a “new restaurant,” but Formaggio Kitchen in Cambridge is anything but.  It’s a gourmet spot that has long been in my Boston rotation.  While I can’t tell you how long they’ve been open, I do know that I’ve had barbecue there as early as 2005.  Same can be said for my beloved Zingerman’s Roadhouse (website).

Second, there’s a difference between a BBQ restaurant and a place that serves barbecue (both of the aforementioned are the latter).

Third, Rolling Bones BBQ is now under new management.  I posted on it earlier today, but I just want to clarify.  I am surprised that it was identified as one of the best in its former incarnation.

I guess the moral of the story is “Be careful what you read.”  You never know how qualified the person behind the list is! (wink) Meanwhile, if you are ever in Cambridge – you must stop in at Formaggio.  Regardless of where you live, YOU MUST try Zingerman’s (via mail order if need be).

Rosa’s Pizza Gone For The Holiday

Posted by foodiebuddha on June 29, 2009

Today, I had a hankerin’ for some greasy pizza.  A trip downtown to visit Rosa’s Pizza was in order.  We pulled up and found a parking spot right in front … score!  The line was non-existent … score!  The lights were off…wait … whuh whut?  Still, I got out of the and approached.  The sign on the door broke the news.  Rosa’s is going on vacay until next Monday.  I suspect their Marietta is also closed until then, but I cannot confirm that.  Alright folks, that’s all she wrote.

Rolling Bones BBQ Meet Todd Richards: Restaurant Review – Downtown, Atlanta, GA [First Impressions] 12

Posted by foodiebuddha on June 29, 2009

The area of downtown surrounding Edgewood Ave doesn’t get a lot of love.  For the most part, it is pretty dingy and it’s definitely not the safest of places.  Still, the ‘hood does have some life, and Rolling Bones Barbecue has long been part of the reason to venture down there.

The converted gas station has one of the most identifiable looks of any Atlanta grub hub.  However, recent events took a toll on business at the barbecue joint.  Enter chef Todd Richards, who, backed by his own LushLifeGroup, acquired the business some months ago.  Earlier this month, Richards began to implement some changes; not surprisingly, I was there soon after.  A couple of trips in and I think I have a good idea of what’s going on.

Death By Cheetos? [Laugh Of The Day]

Posted by foodiebuddha on June 27, 2009

Okay, so maybe not death … but bodily harm by Cheetos?  Maybe …apparently, two hicks people got involved in a verbal altercation.  According to the report, the couple got into a verbal spat where Cheetos were used as a weapon.  And that’s your truly awesome food news of the day!

Co’m Vietnamese Grill – Buford Highway, Atlanta, GA [A Review In Pictures] 4

Posted by foodiebuddha on June 26, 2009

Open roughly four years (at least by my count), Co’m Vietnamese Grill has become one of the de facto responses to the question: “Where do I go in Atlanta for good Vietnamese?”  It is therefore no surprise that this BuHi hotspot now has a devout following and a satellite location.

Eat Better & Feel Better, Atlanta Style

Posted by foodiebuddha on June 25, 2009

So with the release of Food 101, I think now is as good a time as any to share some more healthy eating tips.  Enter Feel Nutrition, an Atlanta based nutrition and holistic website.  Run by one Ms. Tracey Wolf, her aim is to help people feel better.  She accomplishes this through a dietary adjustment plan.  Backed with a degree from the “Institute for Integrative Nutrition,” Tracey seems like an ideal candidate for the job.  Hit up her website for more details.

As a point of disclosure, I have known Tracy for years, though I’ve never employed her services.  And sorry to all you private dics, Tracey has been sworn to secrecy and will be unable to confirm my identity … Muuu haaa!

Free Chick-Fil-A Meal On July 10 [With A Catch]

Posted by foodiebuddha on June 24, 2009

To celebrate their annual customer appreciation day, Chick-Fil-A is giving away a free meal to each and every customer (sort of).  All you have to do is show up dressed as a moo cow.  No word on just how much effort you need to put into your outfit … but it seems to me that the cost of the meal will be less than the cost of the outfit.  You can find the nearest Chick-Fil-A here.

Meanwhile, cruel parents can dress their youngins up, take a pic, and post it online. The winner of that contest gets a $1,000 Savings bond.  Nice! I would gladly sacrifice my younger brother’s dignity for that; unfortunately, he’s over the age of 10 :-(
