Amuse Restaurant Review – Morningside, Atlanta, GA [First Impressions] 2

Posted by foodiebuddha on December 31, 2009

amuse-interior-2 Nestled in the ground floor of Morningside’s Belvedere building, Amuse has taken shape as a pseudo French bistro.  Now the tenants of the shuttered Allegro space, Amuse comes backed by Andy Alibaksh (via  Diem Restaurant Group) and Arnaud Michel (of Anis restaurant).  The duo brought in a fresh staff, hired a known chef (Lenny Robinson), and let him come up with a playful menu.  But like so many before them, this “accomplished” set of restaurateurs seems to imagine dreams that just don’t become reality.

I’m lucky in that I have yet to get a serious case of writers block.  Instead, I’m usually smothered by writers apathy … or whatever you may call it.  Recently, this has been complicated by experiences that have left me a shell of my former self.  Something about me was off … had I become soft?  Had I succumbed to the whims of beautiful women? Was all not well in the life of Foodie Buddha?  Maybe … maybe not.  Regardless, thanks to a recent pep talk courtesy of Spark Plug … I’m back.  Well, actually internal motivators aside, the true culprit here was the meal at Amuse.  After several weeks of quasi uneventful dining, this little bomb blew me strait to heck … and it took a couple of my friends with me.

Sauced Restaurant Gets Going In Atlanta’s Inman Park [Openings] 2

Posted by foodiebuddha on December 28, 2009

SaucedBuilding_inviteWeb

If you take a trip down to the corner of Edgewood and Waddell, you’ll find yourself smack dab in front of one of Atlanta’s newest southern food spots, albeit a slightly modified one.  Sauced, a new rendition from the gang at Ria’s Bluebird, is just about ready to rock and roll.  As you’ll see from the image above (taken from the Sauced website), they’re really going to get it started on NYE.  However, they were open for a bit at the end of August and have already started letting people in the door over the past few days.

LeonPhelps-1 In the news as early as this past January, Ria Pell’s newest venture is a step towards the high-brow.  Keep in mind, that is a statement of relativity.  The food is cost conscious and there is a lot of focus on the sauces.  That said, I don’t believe they’ve employed a saucier (that’d probably be a little too fru fru anyway).  While you sip on your Courvoisier, you and the Ladies Man can chilax on the big couch in the midst of the brown and cream space.   If you are heading down there in the next few, make sure to be liquid – it’s cash only.

I’ll wax-foodetic once I work through my back log.  In the meantime, check out their facebook page, as it already has quite the following, and get ready to munch away.

Chef Jay Swift Of 4th And Swift: Inside The Chef’s Kitchen #8

Posted by foodiebuddha on December 28, 2009

jay-swift-itck I know … I know … many of you were up in arms … angry, confused, and disappointed.  This past Friday, you woke up, grabbed your morning coffee, and opened your browser intent on seeing yet the latest installment of Inside The Chef’s Kitchen.  But alas, nothing was there and so hearts were broken, children were fire bombing, and the world was not at peace.  Well, something else was going on, so I took a few days off.

And so on this particular Monday, we have a special edition of ITCK to compensate for my indiscretion.  As the series concludes its second month, we have yet another stellar participant.  Enter Jay Swift of the quasi-eponymous 4th And Swift.

Previously, the longtime Atlanta chef (but Baltimore native) served up culinary delights at South City Kitchen and the now defunct Rainwater.  These days, he finds himself doing his thang down in the Old 4th Ward.  His continental cuisine powered by a seasonal menu is often discussed around these parts and makes for excellent food porn.  Alright y’all, duck, because there my be some shurikens flying.  And with that, welcome to ITCK!

More cool news for the Dirty.  Recent ITCK participant Shaun Doty is headed to NYC in early February.  While there, he’ll cook dinner at the James Beard House.  In addition to handing out the James Beard Award, the JBF is a full fledged organization that offers recipes, hosts events, and even helps educate people.

One of their recurring events is a dinner series featuring a chef du jour.  On February 3rd, that chef will be the aforementioned Doty.  More details after the jump.

Burger Club Goes Burger Fail: Restaurant Review – Vinings, Atlanta, GA [First Impressions] 6

Posted by foodiebuddha on December 22, 2009

the burger club - the outside

It would seem that The Burger Club has gotten off to a rocky start.  First, there was the name fiasco; then the opening date was repeatedly pushed back.  After all that, the lukewarm started to come in.  Despite these adverse factors, this Vinings burger joint seems like a bustling hotspot; at least that was the case during lunch the other day.

Packed near capacity, families, local businessmen, and a slew of shopping entourages lined up to get their fill of classic American gluttony.  Inside this friendly little space, meaty food trays flew about with purpose.  Severs and food runners ran around with haphazard fervor and there seemed to be a 50’s diner energy to the restaurant.

The Prodigal Son Returns …

Posted by foodiebuddha on December 21, 2009

hardy-wallace-octane

So ya’ll are probably wondering where I’ve been all day.  Well, intentions to post my next diatribe were summarily squashed about 3-hours ago when a certain gentleman danced across my horizon (literally – he did a jig).  Ladies and gents, Hardy is back … but for a limited time only.  Yes, I’m sad to say that I’m pretty sure we’ve lost this crown jewel (but don’t say I didn’t warn you).  In any event, he’s back and he’s bad!

We spent the last few hours chatting each other up … and it’s just the type of conversation that gets you all warm and fuzzy.  The dude is the tits, end of discussion.  Remember to give him a follow as he cavorts around Cali.  If you’re a man (or lady) around town, don’t be surprised if you see him at a hot spot near you.  Back to the 9-5, until tomorrow when I’ll pontificate some more ramblings.

Chef Shaun Doty Of Shaun’s: Inside The Chef’s Kitchen #7 2

Posted by foodiebuddha on December 18, 2009

shaun-doty-itckChef Shaun Doty has long been at the forefront of the Atlanta dining scene.  For the past three-years, he has been the man behind Shaun’s Social Club.  Before that, he headed up things at establishments like Table 1280 and MidCity Cuisine.  Now, he’s primed to open the city’s next burger joint, aptly named Good Burger.

Doty maintains his cool while putting out straightforward, ingredient driven dishes.  Friendly and approachable, the chef has taken the time to step out from behind the burner to drop in here on Inside The Chef’s Kitchen.  In it, he professes his continued love for a particular rendition of fried chicken, manages to sneak in the word “wankers,” and declares … why settle for one when you can have both?  Alright y’all, let the good times roll!  And with that, welcome to ITCK!

Atlanta’s Entrees Are The Most Expensive In The Country 2

Posted by foodiebuddha on December 15, 2009

According to a report published in Reuters, Atlanta is home to the most expensive entrées in the country (at least amongst chains). The article states:

Other findings show that among chains surveyed, Atlanta boasts the most
expensive dinner entrees, averaging $14.75, outpacing the New York, Chicago, and
Los Angeles metro areas.

That’s pretty damn shocking.  Even though it seems you can prove just about anything with a study, to see us outpace true culinary Meccas isn’t a good thing.  While this bit of news is a few months old, I’m really surprised that this didn’t seem to get a mention anywhere around town.

Magnolia Bread Company Brings The Green Van Food Truck To Atlanta [Reader Tip] 3

Magnolia Bread Company The Green Van

My readers are full of great info! Dianne Reinhardt and the folks behind the Magnolia Bread Company (website) have decided to launch their own food truck!  Aptly named “The Green Van,” the just launched website is chock full of good tidbits.

The truck will feature a short and sweet selection of sandwiches, seasonal salads, and desserts.  Joyfully enough, all of them will be constructed from organic goodness.  No word yet on exactly where they’ll try and set up  – but I suspect their twitter account will have the deets.

All Hail Stephanie – whomever you are!!!
