A recent dining excursion took me to the ever bustling Miller Union, a Westside eatery that has become one of the “it places.”  MU is a restaurant that showed up on the scene roughly two-months ago and is currently in the middle of a love fest not uncommon around these parts.  Some heavy hitters love it and judging by the packed house we witnessed, so too do the lay folk.

Sayonara Old Spaghetti Factory, Closed For Good [Dead Pool] 1

The massive restaurant space at the corner of Ponce De Leon and Penn Ave is now dormant.  Yes, it appears that the Old Spaghetti Factory has closed up shop and moved on to greener pastures.   While the restaurant chain is still alive and kicking outside the state of GA, they finally threw in the towel on January 24th.  While I always considered it one of the worst restaurants in the city, the place seemed to get a pretty good crowd.  So in that respect, I must say that this was a bit of a surprise.  Cheerios y’all!

Chef Robert Gerstenecker Of Park 75: Inside The Chef’s Kitchen #11 1

Posted by foodiebuddha on January 22, 2010

robert-gerstenecker-itckFor the past 5-plus years, chef Robert Gerstenecker has helmed the kitchen at Park 75, the flagship restaurant of the Four Seasons in Midtown.  In addition to being an acclaimed fine dining spot, the restaurant has also garnered a good bit of attention for their tea service.

A Canuck by trade, the well traveled Gerstenecker has been with the Four Season chain since the early nineties.  He has spent time working everywhere from his native land to the Chinese port conglomerate known as Hong Kong.  It should be no surprise that Asian influences will sneak their way into the menu at Park 75.  If you do decide to visit Gerstenecker, there is a chef’s table in the kitchen.  It’s a friendly twist to a relatively upscale environment.

So while the seasons of our food lives continue to fluctuate, Gerstenecker keeps his nose to the ground and his food up to date.  Though I have yet to weigh in on P-75, it’s a place revered by many.  Time to get to know the man behind the stove.  And with that, welcome to ITCK!

Taka Sushi Cafe Restaurant Review – Buckhead, Atlanta, GA [First Impressions] 6

Posted by foodiebuddha on January 21, 2010

taka sushi cafe - ooh la la

It’s been several years since Taka Moriuchi packed his knives, left his position as understudy to sushi God Sotohiro Kosugi (aka the dude who ran the much discussed Soto), and settled in as the leader of Taka Sushi Café.

Much like my father, it took me some time before I warmed to the idea of visiting Taka-san in Buckhead.  Even after Soto departed our fare city, something in me caused this undue shackling of obligations.  Mind you, nothing about that decision had anything to do with the kind and approachable Taka.

Time passed and wounds healed, and so began my long inevitable decent into complacency.  Yes, I finally started to drift in and out of this notable Buckhead establishment.  As it happened, 24-months had flown by since my last soirée, well before the young Buddha was born within.  Rather than try and recall experiences buried in the cobwebs someone might call “my brain,” a recent night cap inspired this infant impression.

Kama Sutra Cookie Cutters [Sexified] 2

I love strange crap and this may be the strangest of all the crap I’ve found (at least crap related to food).  Anywho … what better way than to show your lady that you love her than with a freshly baked batch of cookies?  Now, sure you can spend hours painstakingly cutting and shaving your cookies.  Or … you can forgo those hours of hard labor and get yourself a cookie cutter! The bachelor in me says Kama Sutra cookies are the way to go.  So next time you make the sweet sweet sounds of bliss … just smile and think of yours truly!!!

Kraft Set To Acquire Cadbury: Hide Your Easter Eggs Now

Posted by foodiebuddha on January 18, 2010

cadburry-egg

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Kraft Foods, that omnipotent producer of most every type of edible substance (good or otherwise), is set to acquire Cadbury PLC.  If that name sounds familiar, it’s because Cadbury’s claim to fame is none other than those little round eggs of sweetness that you go hunting for every Easter.

So yes, after nearly 200-years of steadfast independence, Great Britain’s most famous confectioner is set to turn the keys over.  If you’ve been following the news, you might have heard how vicious things have been.  Still, after 4-months of quibbling, it looks like the two sides are ready to settle things.

If you want all the “smart persons” stuff, check out the article.  They also have a little timeline that seems useful.

Taco Bell Owner Glen Bell Dies; Makes One Last Run For The Border

Posted by foodiebuddha on January 18, 2010

glen bell

The man who gave every college student hope for a better day finally bid adieu this past Sunday.  Though he hasn’t owned Taco Bell is some time, we all owe a gratitude of debt to Mr. Glen Bell; at least, those of us who pulled every last bit of change out of our couch seats just to grab a delicious Mexican pizza do.  But as time goes on, we must say goodbye to Mr. Bell, good luck hanging on that big gordita in the sky.

B.O.’s Fish Wagon Restaurant Review – Key West, FL [Out Of Town] 2

Posted by foodiebuddha on January 18, 2010

b.o.'s fish wagon - the famous fish wagon by foodiebuddhaYou don’t go to China to enjoy great pizza (though I’m sure it can be found somewhere in the Middle Kingdom).  Similarly, you don’t go to Florida for good Tex-Mex.  No, if you find yourself around 25th parallel, you best ought to stick to the fruits de mer.  So while I dug around Key West early last week, the Unabomber’s girlfriend and I decided to hit up (but not blow up) B.O.’s Fish Wagon, a seafood shack well known around those parts for its kitschy decor, come as you are attitude, and approachably delicious food.  Popular enough to get a shout out in the NY Times and a visit from Bobby Flay (via Food Nation), it was high times that Buddy Owen’s Key West institution tried to take down the Foodie Buddha.  All in all, this was an enjoyable experience, even with some shortcomings in the grub.

Menchi Katsu Burger At Taka Sushi Cafe [Quick Hits] 4

While playing with any convention is dangerous territory, it doesn’t mean it can’t be lighthearted and fun.  I believe that statement is a perfect representation of Taka Moriuchi, the facebooking blogger who also happens to produce some of the better sushi in the city.  Taka-san has a habit of mixing things up a bit, and his burger may just be his best attempt to date.

Japanese food is known for its artful simplicity and its tradition laden techniques.  Still, that doesn’t mean that the cuisine is the least bit static.  Many Japanese chefs, especially those of the sushi persuasion, are at the center of this movement.  Here at this precipice stands the Menchi Katsu burger from Taka Sushi Cafe, that ever popular neighborhood sushi joint located in the glitz of Buckhead.
