Slowly, but surely, we eek along. Some four months after my first sub tour pit stop, I find we are just now passing the 3/4 flag. You know what they say … time flies when you are having fun. Yesterday’s meal found me all alone at the Bread Garden. Tucked away on Amsterdam Walk near Morningside/Lenox Park, the Bread Garden has long had a reputation for some of the best breads in the city.
Even if you show up without any knowledge of their reputation, you’d soon learn of the importance that grains play here: a basket of baguettes usually adorns the door. So while the exterior appearance of the Bread Garden is as Plain Jane as it comes; the interior is home to a variety of freshly baked bread and freshly made goodies.

So yesterday was LottaFrutta; that quirky and offbeat food stop down in the Old 4th Ward/Inman Park. A self-proclaimed fruit house and market, it translates into a fruit bar with sandwiches and salads. Their style is unique (at least to this town); and, as such, it was time that I took the Atlanta Sub & Sandwich Tour down yonder.
Whether you think their name should be one word or two, one thing is for sure: you’ll remember this place. It starts from the outside. The fruit wrapped car is almost always sitting Southside on Randolph; meanwhile, the interior is awash in a palate of fruit colors and patterns. Keep your eyes open, LottaFrutta has their own chi [A lemon that sits in one corner … noted as an energy lemon]. This style continues all the way through to their sandwich selection. They’re fairly simple, but they do have personality. Meanwhile, the ultimate question still needs to be answered.

Café at Pharr in Buckhead has been around for a long time. Soon after the Braves were cheated out of a World Series victory by Kent Hrbek [yeah – I’m talking to you!!!], this place opened (circa 1992). I actually remember eating here inside their first month of operation. What a cute little foodie I was! (or at least, that’s what I tell myself). Any who … Many years later, C at P is still going strong.
Pharr has been the subject of several foodie posts (here, here, and here) and gets high scores from fans (urbanspoon & yelp). With all that blog love, it seemed only fitting that this place worked its way onto the Atlanta Sub & Sandwich Tour. As logic follows, I decided to make this stop #13 (my lucky number).
In the neighborhood for a hair cut (Colette Design rules!), I figured it was as good a time as any to grab some grub there. Well, it turns out my luck has run out. Okay, admittedly luck did not play much of a factor in this. I’ve eaten at CaP a number of times over the years and I knew what I was getting myself into. Still, I showed up, disregarded my past experiences, and got busy.

In the past year, Atlanta has taken a few stiff upper cuts to its Cuban jaw. Fire gutted Havana (reportedly due to arson) in October after owner Silvesonso Ramirez closed Midtown’s Kool Korner Grocery in August. The opportunity gave Papi’s (pronounced like Poppy seed) the chance to snag market share. Backed by an already strong following, the restaurant upgraded its digs, expanded its interior, and even added a new location.
Nowadays, Papi’s in Midtown is a hopping lunch spot with long lines and a devoted following. Given its proximity to my home and its new found fame, it was only a matter of time before I worked it in on the Atlanta Sub & Sandwich Tour.

A long time ago in a sandwich shop, far away…
I best most of ya’ll thought I had forgotten about the sub & sandwich tour. Truth is, I just got a bit worn out on sandwiches. While I did grab a few sandwiches in the past few weeks, my rate of consumption plummeted. The time off has rejuvenated me and I hope to have this thing wrapped up in the next couple of weeks.
To get things back up and running, I elected to visit the Highland Bakery in Inman Park. In true Foodie Buddha fashion, the meal let me down. While many people revel in the fresh baked goods and the variety of options on the menu, my meal just didn’t come together as I had hoped. Services issues aside (they aren’t factored in on the tour), I found both of my sandwiches disappointing.

Oh Atlanta S&S Tour, how I have missed you! Travel, temporary sandwich burn out, and life in general caused me to miss a few weeks. What better way to get back in the saddle than with a trip to Star Provisions. In the realm of high-end gourmet shops, SP seems to garner a near godlike appreciation amongst Atlanta socialites. I myself am a big fan; over the years I have enjoyed everything from their wine and cheeses, to their sandwiches, to their eating accessories. But alas, this is the sandwich tour … so with my blinders firmly in place, my camera in hand (UGGHGHGHGHGH), and some help … off to the principal’s office we go! [Sorry – my childhood rears it’s ugly head!]

Well, sorry that it’s so late in the day. I had a lot going on … but, I wanted to get this up today. We are fast approaching the half-way point in the Atlanta Sub & Sandwich Tour. To date, there have only been a couple of strong showings. Luckily, today’s lunch at Sawicki’s marked another successful meal.
The trek to Decatur was a bit more adventurous than I would have hoped. Apparently, Atlanta drivers are under strict orders: if it rains – make sure you disobey every traffic law possible! That aside, the laid back attitude and fresh ingredients at Sawicki’s left me optimistic for the meal. Their sign, “Eat Good Food,” says it all!

Yesterday marked my first sandwich tour stop in over a week. It was a needed break; but, I am happy to be back in the saddle. After hitting up a handful of “gourmet” sandwich shops, I thought it would be good to return with a trip to a straight forward bakery. Henri’s Bakery … this is your cue to enter stage left. Though I’ve done a full review of HB, this Atlanta mainstay deserved some tour love.

Today’s lunch excursion took me to Souper Jenny. Flying solo, the idea of ordering two sandwiches all by my lonesome intimidated me. As luck would have it, my 2:00 was in Buckhead and Souper J allowed me to meet the two sandwich requirement without having to gorge myself. I have dined at SJ a handful of times; and, it seems the daily sandwiches are designed to be enjoyed with a side or two.
I strolled in at approximately 1:15 and immediately took note of my fellow patrons. Of the 30 or so people inside, I was the only dude (sans an hombre behind the counter). Ah, Buckhead Mommies do love this place! But … would I?

I’ve spent an inordinate amount of time in the Vinings area the past few days. After a great lunch at Social Vinings on Tuesday and a disaster of a meal at nearby South City Kitchen later that night, I returned today to hit up Muss & Turner’s for lunch. I haven’t spent this much time in Vinings since my move from the area some five years ago.
M&Ts is one of those trendy names in the Atlanta dining scene. Joined by the techtastic foodies who run Chowdownatlanta and Eatitatlanta, we showed up for a late lunch with high expectations. It was a meal of firsts for me and I was really happy to have some lunch buddies for the meal.
