It’s amazing to me just how many of my favorite meals are the consequence of haphazard circumstance.  Such is the case with my recent trip to Desta, a popular Ethiopian restaurant located near the intersection of Briarcliff and Clairmont.  While Desta has a much more vibrant following than a place like Celia’s [you’ve all been … right?], that fact alone did not make this trip any less of a surprise.  Tasked with the role of choosing a restaurant for a follow up to the night’s earlier Linner, I managed to pull Desta out of thin air.  Luckily, Ms. Vennerable [sic] is a fairly adventurous eater and an avid fan of all things Ethiopian.

There’s a reason why I haven’t talked a lot about the dozen or so Ethiopian eateries in and around the metro-Atlanta area.  In my three or four experiences with the indigenous African fare, I have found the food to be passable at best (the word barftastic comes to mind).  Mind you, not a single one of these meals has taken place in the last three-years and none of them at a location anywhere close to the state we all know as Georgia.

desta ethiopian kitchen - le plate de kiftoAs with most every regional cuisine, there is a deep and rich history behind Ethiopian food.  It’s one I am in no position to comment on.  So not only have I had bad run-ins with it, but the situation is exacerbated by my ignorance.  Still, I think this position actually works in our favor.  While there is something to be said for my rantings that are backed by a more substantial knowledge base, there is something charming in my ignorance.  If you’re still with me, it is a safe bet that when most people are asked to rattle off their favorite cuisines, Ethiopian is probably mentioned more in jest than as a serious response.

Off-color humor aside, I relished in the ability to walk into a place with little more than a cursory knowledge of the food and simply just taste.  As luck would have it, the reputation behind Desta seems to be earned.  Perhaps your experience will mimic mine.

Holeman And Finch Baked Goods Are At Savor Specialty Foods

Ah… last night was a good night.  Amongst the many jewels of information that were passed around, I found out that a complete lineup of goods from Holeman & Finch Bakery are served up at nearby Savor Specialty Foods.  Here’s the breakdown:

Approximately a month ago, H&F Bakery closed its doors to the public.  However, the bakery still has a full array of goods available for wholesale.  Savor, which sits in the Peachtree Battle Shopping Center just up the street from H&F, decided to get in on the action.  Though I haven’t actually been to Savor since HnFB’s pseudo shutdown, I will say that I have always enjoyed their selection of gourmet goods and a good bit of the grub.  Included in the selection at Savor are  cookbooks, cookware, spices, mustards, and so forth.  Meanwhile, they also have a food counter where they serve up things like cured meats, cheeses, fruit salads, chicken salads, and freshly made sandwiches.  Last but not least, they also provide a catering service, though I’ve never tried it.

According to the gang at Holeman, most everything that could be had at the bakery is now up the street.

Sawicki’s In Decatur: Atlanta Sub & Sandwich Tour #9 5

sawicki's eat good food signWell, sorry that it’s so late in the day.  I had a lot going on … but, I wanted to get this up today.  We are fast approaching the half-way point in the Atlanta Sub & Sandwich Tour.  To date, there have only been a couple of strong showings.  Luckily, today’s lunch at Sawicki’s marked another successful meal.

The trek to Decatur was a bit more adventurous than I would have hoped.  Apparently, Atlanta drivers are under strict orders: if it rains – make sure you disobey every traffic law possible!  That aside, the laid back attitude and fresh ingredients at Sawicki’s left me optimistic for the meal.  Their sign, “Eat Good Food,” says it all!

Specialty Food Shops In Atlanta Get A Boost! The Mercantile Rejoices!

Owners of those specialty food shops in the city of Atlanta got some good news late yesterday.  Currently, city law prevents small establishments from selling liquor under particular circumstances (namely: proximity to another business that sells liquor).

Thanks in large part to the work of Janea Boyles, of The Mercantile, and of city council member Anne Fauver, ordinance 08-0-0843 passed!  The goal of the ordinance is to make it so that applications from these small businesses rely on factors unique to this type of business.   While there are a few more hurdles in place, I’ll try and find out how soon until the crazy grape juice hits the shelves! After all, the Mercantile is a destination on the Atlanta Sub & Sandwich Tour

La Quercia Prosciutto: Top Notch Iowa Prosciutto, Apparently It Does Exist 3

media While I, like many others, have not had, let alone heard, about American cured prosciutto, a family business out of Iowa has been taking things to a new level since 2005.

La Quercia, pronounced Kwair-cha, has had some great press recently.  It seems like they really know their stuff.  Though I do not know anyone who has tried it, I’m going to place an order from their website soon!

Speaking of their website, it is chock full of great info and imagery (that pictures is from from their site).  The “What We Make” page seems like it ought to be required reading.

I am a huge fan of tea. Anyone who knows me knows it is my beverage of choice. Unfortunately, I rarely make it at home (though I have boxes of tea bags lying around). I always end up buying the mass-marketed, sugar infused junk (Raspberry Arizona anyone?). I guess I am a bit lazy! However, I have always had a secret admiration for the healthier alternatives. My favorite of all “herbal/organic/healthy” teas is called Rooibos (pronounced ROY-boss).
