Coo Coo’s Nest Goes Ugh – Lake Lanier, Cumming, GA [Quick Hits]

coo-coos-nest-interiorWhile I have no problem hopping in the car for a 45-minute drive to check out a restaurant, I can assure you that nothing about my recent trip to the Coo Coo’s Nest in Cumming was redeemable.  The massive, two-story complex reads like many in this category.  The interior is marked by high ceilings, open rooms, and a polished finish.  It’s extremely clean, and doesn’t seem like a bad place to catch a game.

That’s where the joy in this bubbly establishment seems to run out.  I only had a chance to sample a few things, so it’s possible something on the menu is palatable; but I doubt I’ll ever be back to find out.  The menu reads like that of any basic chain restaurant, and the food tastes even worse.

The baked potato soup showed up and you could immediately tell it was simply squeezed out of a bag.  Still, it was passable.  The chicken salad sandwich was not.  It seems as if they took some shredded chicken, added in an ounce of mayonnaise, and then dropped in about 3 quarts of sugar.  Overbearingly sweet, I was done in two bites.  I had a similar action to the deeply fried steak fries as I did the the tater soup.

As for service … well … it didn’t help that they were short staffed, leading to one of the most drawn out meals I have ever bared witness to.  Though I was in no rush due to the topic at hand with my lunch buddies, it’s pretty sad that it took them 90-minutes to deliver two soups, three entrées, and a check.  I’m sure things are better when the staff is all there, simply because it has to be.  I didn’t care to point out to our waiter that there were at least four hostesses on duty who should have been able to help stop the bleeding.

I know that food isn’t the most important thing, but come on … there is a limit.  Though I’m distinctly unfamiliar with the surrounding area inside of a two-mile radius, I would hope there is a better alternative in the close proximity.  If there isn’t, I’d keep driving until I found something else.  I’d rather eat out of a dumpster than put anything from Coo Coo’s back in my mouth.  Hey, at least they got a facebook page

  2. Yeah I have heard nothing but bad things about this place which is practically in our backyard. Such a shame too, it took them too long to build and now a poor result. I wish we had more places to eat out here that were worth the trip!

    • You should try this restaurant again.  We went there Saturday night and our food was delicious!

  3. I undersatnd the live music on Friday evening is pretty good. I plan to check it out since “live” anything aroung here is limited…

  4. First of all, you go in the middle of the day when the establishment had first opened. Admittedly, there were shortcomings as is always the case at the beginning of any new restaurant. Personnel and menu changes are made until any issues are reduced to a minimum. Review what patrons have been saying as of late. Secondly, if you have an unbiased “objective” to review a restaurant you are not likely going to order a chicken salad sandwich. It does not appear any real restaurant review was done here. As for the fries, I have had them and would not say they are the best I have ever had but I will say that I have heard more than a few say that they thought they were. [Translated, that means that they are very good]. Try the hooch beans, the red beans and rice, or God forbid, a real entree. This place has some of the best steaks litterally anywhere. [that again is from personal experience and the testimony of many in the place]. As you can tell I spend a lot of time in this place, but why? I have no interest in this place other than I like it and the folks who work there. Give this place another try and you will not be disappointed…….and set your sights a little higher than a cold sandwich.

  5. I would have to agree with Dawg on the review thing. If you were doing a review you should’ve gotten something other than a cold sandwich. I have been there a couple of times, both times I had the salmon. Both times were good, I even got asked to dance the second time I was there. However, I noticed that the second time I had the salmon, it didn’t come with the bourbon sauce, and I was highly disappointed because that made the whole dish. Don’t get me wrong, the salmon tasted great, but the sauce was very yummy. I asked and they said that they dont have it anymore. Total disappointment. Anyways, at least I got a dance out of it 🙂 Next time go downstairs, thats where the party is AT!!! Live music was great as well. Usually theres quite a few people at Coo Coos on the weekends. I always see them when I drive by at night. Great place to party, and as for the food, its not that bad either. Maybe new management would get the staff up to speed.

  6. I have often wondered as I drove by what this place was like. Now that I know I doubt if I’ll ever go there. Sure wish there were a Popeye’s around here. :)) At least I know the chicken there is mmm good.

  7. I’ve eaten here several times, and I will be back. The food is great and the service is, too. Check out the appetizers and entres during the week and you’ll find them as good as anywhere. Their Sunday specials are loaded with goodies. It’s just a great place to bring guests, as I have and watch TV and socialize in a beautifu setting both outside and inside.

  8. I agree the service was good but I was charged for food I didnt order. Food not that great.

  9. We just went to Coo Coo’s Nest the other night (9-3-11) and it was amazing!  I am a burger connoisseur and it was one of the best cheese burgers that I have ever had!  I live in Atlanta and I used to think Houston’s had the best but not any more.  I’ve read the bad reviews below, but I think there must be new management also.  The servers couldn’t have been nicer or more helpful and the manager was constantly checking on us and it was a very busy Saturday night.  We are thinking about buying a lake home and I am literally checking to see how far each home is from this restaurant!  🙂
